The 1953 Conference on Totalitarianism is an important moment in history, and van Uden shows us just how it crystallised the meaning of totalitarianism. He introduces us to Conference participants such as George Kennan and Carl. J Friedrich, and shows us how they defined what it meant to be totalitarian. He then moves to examine other key Conference participants such as Bertram D. Wolfe, Waldemar Gurian and Jerzy G. Gliksman and how they added depth to the categories and definition that Carl. J Friedrich provided. Van Uden then introduces us to how Karl W. Deutsch outlined the ‘Patterns’ in the process which sees totalitarian systems disintegrate and the possible events that might occur within this process. Throughout this work van Uden explains to us how totalitarian regimes such as the USSR, Nazi Germany, Mao's China and North Korea under the Kim family are totalitarian. He also looks at just how relevant the term ‘totalitarian’ is today and what a modern audience can learn from this conference.
